THE MISSION OF CHRIST EPISCOPAL DAY SCHOOL

The mission of this school is to provide quality early childhood education in the context and atmosphere of a Christian community in accordance with the mission and ministry of Christ Episcopal Church.

 OUR PHILOSOPHY

Christ Episcopal Day School offers a program that stimulates the intellect, challenges the body, fills the spirit, and above all, loves the child.  The program was developed as an extension of Christ Episcopal Church's ministry, and at the heart of the program is a staff that strives each day to introduce the children to the joy of learning, the warmth of sharing, the thrill of accomplishment, and the wonder of God's love for all creatures "great and small."

A PRAYER FOR THE CARE OF SMALL CHILDREN

Almighty God, heavenly Father, you have blessed us with the joy and care of children:  give us calm strength and patient wisdom as we bring them up, that we may teach them to love whatever is just and true and good, following the example of our Savior Jesus Christ.  From the Book of Common Prayer

CURRICULUM

Mother's Morning Out

Since these children are young and this is their first introduction to school, we provide a low structured Christian environment using Karen Henley's Bible Time for Toddlers and Twos curriculum.  These toddlers are learning to separate from their parents and interact with other children.  A typical day may involve free play, story time, music with finger play and rhythm, craft time and very simple circle time.  A Bible verse taught each month will also be a valuable part of each child's learning experience.

 Preschool

This program includes a weekly chapel, music and rhythm, Bible verses and lessons story time, learning centers, snack, and lunch.  The classes also have a supervised recess time when weather permits. Children will learn to identify colors, shapes, numbers, and letters of the alphabet while being introduced to activities which stimulate the senses of touch, hearing, smell, taste, and sight.  Bright Beginnings curriculum is used and classes will introduce thematic units on preschool topics of interest such as:

learning about ourselves and new friends, fire safety, harvest time, apples, pumpkins, the farm, the sea, Thanksgiving, Jesus' birthday, giving and sharing, snow, winter, colors, insects, plants, animals, transportation, dental health, spring and Easter.

TWOS

Twos learn to interact with peers, follow directions, participate in group activities, and improve language and social skills such as sharing and waiting your turn.

THREES

Threes should be potty trained.  Each child should be starting to use preschool scissors, naming every day objects, and sorting items by shape and color.  Threes should be fairly accustomed to waiting turns, sharing with peers, and following directions.

FOURS

Fours should be able to use preschool scissors easily and draw shapes and symbolic pictures.  They should be able to identify, name, and sort according to color and shape, as they will build on these skills while learning to recognize and write numbers and letters of the alphabet.  Fours will focus on patterns, sequencing, number concept, alphabet sounds, and clear communication.

CHRISTIAN EDUCATION

In Mark 10:14 , Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me."  At Christ Episcopal Day School, our goal is expose children to the unconditional love of Jesus.  As these children explore and learn, we hope they will discover the awesome power of God and his tremendous love for each one of them.

Weekly, the Threes and Fours will attend chapel with the director or one the church's staff presiding. Each teacher will also incorporate scripture into the thematic units and share these with the parents in the monthly newsletter.  The Threes and Fours should be encouraged in fun ways to memorize their Bible verses and apply them to their lives.  "Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it." Proverbs 22:6

MUSIC EDUCATION

Weekly lessons for the Threes and Fours will include activities such as singing and vocal development, rhythm development, exploration of a variety of musical instruments, introduction of basic musical symbols, learning about a variety of musical styles, composers, the orchestra, families of instruments, and music from around the world.  Lessons will also be designed to incorporate regular classroom learning themes and units as a way of connecting music classes with ongoing classroom learning.
