I was blessed to be allowed to go to Haiti last May.  No matter what you have heard about the poverty
there it overwhelms you.  Where there was once beauty with lush forest and shinning beaches it is now mud,
dust and TRASH.  There is very little electricity, clean water, and jobs are almost nonexistent.  The people
are all that is left of a once beautiful country.  I guess that was my biggest surprise, the faith of many of the
people we came to serve.  The love of God shone on their faces and I am reminded of Jesus' words
"Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of Heaven."  There is still an element of dark magic or
voodoo.  The Episcopal Church in Haiti worked hard to protect and care for us, but it is still dangerous.  Our
driver was murdered a few weeks after we left.
No matter the dreaded outdoor toilet, hangout of goats, mosquitoes and tarantulas, I would go back
anytime.  I loved my new friends that came with me from Charleston, each with just the right job to do, each
giving their love in their own unique way.  We were also blessed with the loving spirit of the Haitian people.  It
it true that in giving we receive.
Thanks be to God,  Blaine Fennell
