| I was blessed to be
allowed to go to Haiti last May. No matter what you have heard about
the poverty |
| there it overwhelms you. Where there was once beauty
with lush forest and shinning beaches it is now mud, |
| dust and TRASH. There is very little electricity,
clean water, and jobs are almost nonexistent. The people |
| are all that is left of a once beautiful country. I
guess that was my biggest surprise, the faith of many of the |
| people we came to serve. The love of God shone on
their faces and I am reminded of Jesus' words |
| "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the
kingdom of Heaven." There is still an element of dark magic or |
| voodoo. The Episcopal Church in Haiti worked hard to
protect and care for us, but it is still dangerous. Our |
| driver was murdered a few weeks after we left. |
| No matter the
dreaded outdoor toilet, hangout of goats, mosquitoes and tarantulas, I
would go back |
| anytime. I loved my new friends that came with me
from Charleston, each with just the right job to do, each |
| giving their love in their own unique way. We were
also blessed with the loving spirit of the Haitian people. It |
| it true that in giving we
receive.
