Christ Church was one of the original ten parishes established by the Church of England’s Church Act of 1706. Christ Church Parish encompassed all of the coastal land between Charleston harbor and the Santee river. The first congregation met in 1708 in a small wooden structure, which burned and was replaced by a masonry structure in 1727. The interior and roof were burned by retreating British troops in 1782. After the Revolutionary War, Christ Church, along with other former Church of England churches in South Carolina, formed the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina, which then became one of the founding dioceses of the The Episcopal Church in the United States. The roof and interior were again burned in 1865 by Union troops, but again rebuilt with the original walls from 1727. By the early 21st century, Christ Church consisted of three worship buildings, a Day School, Parish Hall, and offices on 27 acres on Highway 17 at Longpoint Road.
In 2012 Christ Church joined the majority of churches in the Episcopal Diocese of South Carolina in disaffiliation from The Episcopal Church, and in 2017 joined the Anglican Church in North America. The litigation which resulted from the disaffiliation lasted until 2022, when the court determined that the property belonged to the Episcopal Church. Therefore, in September of 2022 approximately 75% of the congregation, under the name Christ Church Anglican, left its historic campus and began worshiping in the Performing Arts room at Jennie Moore Elementary School in north Mt. Pleasant.
Today Christ Church Anglican is on the move in many ways. In the first six months since relocating, the church has not only secured a warm, spacious temporary Sunday worship home at Jennie Moore, but also moved into a new office and meeting space on Hwy 17 near Hwy 41, purchased land on Faison Road for a new permanent location, formed a Building Committee, and received a $1 million gift for the new Building Fund. We are excited about where the Spirit of God will lead us, and we invite you to come join us as we make disciples of Jesus, seeking in all things to become more like Him!
